Books About the Effects of ACEs

Childhood Disrupted

Childhood Disrupted (by Donna Jackson Nakazawa) is a fantastic book about the effects of ACEs and how to heal if you have been exposed to them.

At the beginning of this book, you can take a quiz to discover your ACE score. Jackson Nakazawa then dives deep into the mechanisms behind the effects of ACEs on the brain and body and how they can lead to physical and mental health problems. She also touches on research indicating that women tend to be more negatively affected by ACEs than men.

In the second half of the book, Jackson Nakazawa discusses recovery from ACEs, including finding professional help and how to parent when your childhood may have been difficult.

Throughout the book, she includes stories of those who have been impacted by ACEs and how they found healing. While this book doesn’t examine ACEs and their recovery from a Catholic perspective, it is still a good book to learn about ACEs and their healing.
